Originally a two-room layout, this master bath renovation combines two spaces into one to create a contemporary, yet soothing urban spa-like setting. By removing the original lowered ceiling, and creating low-profile soffits for recessed lighting, the space becomes airy and bright, while at the same time allows for a soothing zen-like oasis, with its black, white, glass,and chrome motif. Lofty Aspirations / Master Bedroom, The Master Bedroom is really a Sleeping Area that doubles as a Den. It was created by installing a Murphy Bed, the underside of which gave me a canvas to add a "splatter" graphic, giving the space a colorful focal point when not in use. Visually, it is separated from the living room only by an entertainment "cube" that includes a wall-mounted television on the living room side, and a smaller television for the sleeping area side, exposed behind a panel that pivots. A two-sided bio-fuel fireplace allows for additional visual access between the two spaces and a welcome source of heat during the winter months. The enclosure of a portion of the original outdoor terrace expands the room and provides morning sun from its southern exposure. Lofty Aspirations / Guest Bathroom, The guest bathroom originally served not only guests, but also the 2nd bedroom of the apartment. With the renovation of the apartment from a two-bedroom / two-bath unit to an open floor plan "loft-style" space, with no defined bedroom, the 5' x 8' guest bath is used strictly for guests. Lofty Aspirations / Kitchen, As in most older apartment buildings, the existing kitchen was dark and enclosed, providing no visual connection with the rest of the apartment. This most recent renovation of the 8' x 9' kitchen opens it up dramatically by removing non-sturctural walls, creating an island with seating, and a sleek contemporary work space with open access to the living room, dining area, and the rest of the apartment. Lofty Aspirations / Entry Hall, This updated entry hall in a 1960's apartment provides a contemporary "sense of arrival" that turns this once drab, dark, and uninviting passageway into an interesting, colorful, and inviting "room." Master bathroom with vintage touch, This is a newly constructed master bathroom. I went with a vintage feel using hexagon tiles on shower floor and adding a claw foot tub. Dark beadboard cabinetry, glass knobs and carrara marble counters. I was inspired by a recent stay at Watch Hill's newly rebuilt Oceanhouse Hotel in Rhode Island.

SMALL BATHROOM SOLUTIONS, So you're renting, and the bathrooms aren't quite the same size as what you use to have? Lack of storage space? Lack of wall space? Just lack of space - period? Here's a few small changes I made to one of our now small bathrooms. In our FL townhome before, we had 2 and a 1/2 bathrooms, offering both space + storage. Now we've gone to two, probably equally the size of our master bathroom before. A small space transformation like this can be done in a day. It's simple enough for a rental, or even a home staging if you need to sell. If you're looking for a simple weekend project for your home, this would be a great project to do, plus maybe add stencil or stripes to the walls for extra wow.
