Right, as a designer the one thing we strive for is homeowner happiness and they are extatic. Cannot mount anything on the hemp wall (or shouldn't for several reasons the most important being it's real hemp. The prep and product for that one wall was $2000. So, that wall is a feature; it's art in and of itself. When you're actually standing in the room you can tell the effect I was going for. Once you tap into that wall covering you ruin it forever. Either that same piece of art has to hang there or something in the same spot or you leave it as the focal point it was mean to be. I advise the home owners and they decided to leave it; it's really gorgeous on site. Thank you for the lesson. I have been duly educated! Truly, my comments and observations were not meant to be taken personally. Different strokes for different folks. Though it's not visually appealing to me, it seems to be to others and I say to each his own. I would definitely be proud to have elements from the room in my home. You are right, I was commenting mostly on the decor, not the design. The design, layout, and functionality seem to be spot on. I don't care for the color mix and see some things that are definitely off scale {the lamps jump out}. I would also like to see a piece of art over the bed. It's purely an aesthetic preference on my part and as I said, if the homeowners are happy, that's great.

Also, bondepegasus...the accessories used in this space for the pro photos were there for staging. And I wanted to make a comment about the transition form the hemp wall to the window wall or the opposed green wall (but this site chops up my posts. The comment is that this wall is an accent wall. I wanted it to stand out. The window on that wall with the same treatment as the other windows helps with transformation. The hemp wall however doesn't have to transition to the juxtaposed walls because it is being used as an accent, texture, and a ground for the furniture, floowing and bedding. The lamps by the way work fine for the clients' purposes (and were their choice but also because there is other lighting on dimmer in the room.

So, allow me to help you understand the "design" behind this room and why it does actually work. First understand there is a difference between design and decorating. Design says that form follows function. What you are commenting on is the decor not the design; seeing each element individually. I see how you view the room as disconnected but let me run you through the space with a designer's eye and the rules of great design.

Something was needed in the corner. The clients love to read so a book shelf seemed reasonable (form following function. However, I needed to use something that would allow for book storage yet still give the home owner room to get out on that side of the bed. The ladder shelves in that stain seemed to be a good choice. When you're standing in the space they work. Thank you for your comments!

The white was chosen to offset all the dark colors of the room and if you notice the ceiling is white and so is the crown moulding. To me accessories can be whatever style you like as long as the scale works. Accessorizing is a way to showcase your personal items no matter if they "match" the general style of the room. In the design world, this is called an anomaly and every space needs some. There is a lot going on in this space that to the eye which is just looking to match things doesn't make sense. There are other things in the room that are green. Notice the artist-rendered gourds on the built-in and there is a touch of green in the artwork above the fireplace; also in the accent pillows on the bed there is an element of green (you don't always have to match the same shade. And don't forget the outside? Remember when you have a space that has so much view to the outside, those colors are incorporated into your design. Your patio furniture, landscaping, etc., those colors need to be part of your color palette. So, the green does makes sense. The red rug does make sense because red and green are a color harmony called "complimentary." This means they are opposite on the color wheel. Color harmonies are very important in establishing a color palette. The color and shape of the branches in this rug are actually "grounding" the bed, the hemp wall and balance some of the espresso stained furniture.

What a transformation. Job well done!

The room has some wonderful elements. The floor is gorgeous, the area rug is stunning, and the furniture is nice. That said, there seems to be a huge disconnect between most of the elements. There's a combination of warm and cold colors. The green walls make no sense because there is nothing else green in the room {a green toss pillow and/or throw would go a long way to tie things together}. The red in the rug makes no sense because there are no other reds in the room. The lamps are way too small in scale. The transition from the warm, textural hemp wall covering to the cool green wall is too abrupt and needs to be softened with drapery. The cream color of the silk shades clashes with the stark white color of the bedding and rug. The dresser accessories are way off. There are several decor styles represented. To me, nothing seems to coordinate and each piece seems so disparate from the next. I wouldn't be happy with the room as is. I am glad your clients are.
