This space, behind the garage of a large property, was overrun with roots from a ficus tree that dominated the area. Long unused, it had a set of very steep stairs constructed of brick and rotting railroad ties. I was asked to make the space a calm and cool refuge from the summer heat, a place where every member of the family could experience the quiet tranquility of a trickling fountain and the dappled light of the surrounding trees. The one restriction was that the stairs had to be made less steep, more gradual, as the owner couldn't navigate anything steep or insubstantial.
