I also like the idea of Hardy planks instead on the wood parts. You could use Hardy's upright board and batten siding instead of the planks, painted taupe or olive-y green. OR... replace the diagonal wood with taupe stucco like the interior of the porch walls. However, covering the wood with all stone could look really great - IFyou can match the current stone and grout exactly. Break up the front with very rustic shutters - [the kind made with 3-4 vertical slats and 2-3 cross members] painted dark brown to match the garage doors.

I like the idea about siding but instead of vinyl how about Hardy siding/planks. They are durable and offer a more updated look. You are also able to paint them. I like the look of the wood garage doors so I personally would not change them but the trim around the doors could possibly be the same siding/planks. They have samples in Home Depot if you want to take a look at them. I actually saw them at the end of one of the paint isles.

That diagonal wood on the second floor probably looked great in the 80's. I'm not sure that covering it up with more stone is the answer. I think I would consider vinyl siding for that area. Repost when you are finished. Congratulations on your new home!
