A spare bedroom turned home office that we designed to marry our eclectic style with workspace function on a budget. Me (Alyse and my husband Edmund needed a place to work from home, so we Craigslisted the desk and gave it a mini-makeover by lacquering the top white. We also wanted a quiet place to read or sit, so we found a sofa (also from Craigslist that looked good AND folded into a bed for overnight guests--double duty! We DIY'd the shelves (wall mounted to save floorspace, the curtains, and the reading light. The newsroom-style clocks are a nod to our family in other countries: Edmund's whole family lives in Ireland and my father lives and works in Iraq. Throw in a few accessories and a vintage desk lamp from my grandmother, and we finished the whole thing up for under $400.
