The kitchen was the last room we tackled during our 8-month total home renovation. We completely gutted the space and started from scratch, reconfiguring it into an L-shape. We really wanted to preserve the unpretentious vintage cottage look -the house was built in 1909 - so no granite counter tops for this girl! Our budget was around 12K and that included all the mechanics, labor and a few nightmares along the way (including a contractor that walked out on the job. I should also mention that our kitchen is in the "basement" of our home. Pittsburgh, PA has quirky homes like that! However, since the house has really high ceilings and is built on a hill that slopes down and the kitchen leads out onto a deck and has full windows, I refuse to call it the basement.
