My house was built in 1890. The kitchen was ugly and totally useless. There was no counter space, no real cabinets and the sink was stuck in a corner. So I gutted the entire thing and started over. There was a small set of stairs that led to the second floor stairs. This was along a wall that you could do nothing with. I ended up closing that off and now the kitchen is more functional, up to date and it seems bigger. Also turned the pantry into a new laundry room.
