This 1925 country kitchen is where my grandmother prepared all the meals with vegetables grown from the garden. I am third generation. When my mother died two years ago, I decided to move in the home I grew up in. I need help. This kitchen needs fixin! Meal preparation and family gatherings are restricted to this tiny space. I have grand ideas but need help in incorporating my vision. The family home is about a mile from the military base and harbor. I like the maritime location because of the soft steady, breezes that blow in from the habor and the horns of the military ships coming and going from the ports. It gives me a sense of comfort.

I really appreciate everyones suggestions to my dilema and the challenges I have with updating this space without taking away its true character and old fashion charm. I am going to play around with the space this weekend. The idea of moving the frig to the kitchen nook area seems plausible. Our frig is so big, we may need to scale down a size to optimize the space. If I relocate the frig it is possible that a table surface type unit can go next to the stove. The kitchen countertop has to go. I was thinking of a countertop that is nonporous. I love to do home projects, but stripping these walls will be very hard work. For example, I tried to tackle the build in china cabinet door and, my Lord, was that a challenge. I could not believe how many layers of paint was there. Of course, this project came to an abrupt halt. I may need to leave it to the professionals that are willing to allow me to help them with this arduous project so I can learn something. i LOVE that you want to restore this little gem! if you can, strip the paint from the cabinetry on the sink wall and the built-in's. the charm of the old can work so well against new and more modern elements!! what you NEED is storage and work surface and the table set is too big and eating up the whole space, so, move it elsewhere or sell it. then play with the layout....can the opening into the laundry space and the space where built-in's are both be enlarged and opened up more to the kitchen? the fridge might be able to go into laundry area or where mom had it and be more accessible! then consider opening the upper wall [above base cabinets] between the LR and kitchen to create a peninsula with casual bar seating...this will visually make both space look larger and will create a nice, open & modernized flow. keep us posted! i can't wait to see how you make this space work!! it's so charming and quaint...keep as many of those elements in the space when you update! PLEASE! :]
