A few years ago, my wife and I moved into our dream home in a dream neighborhood. Everything was great except the kitchen, which we thought was serviceable until we realized that the cabinets were turning to particle board dust and the drop ceiling was collapsing. We lived with it as long as we could, but a year ago finally bit the bullet and hired a designer. We knew and shared what we wanted, but when his designs came back they were way off the mark, and honestly way outside our budget. At that point, we took matters into our own hands and hired a contractor and went to a number of kitchen and tile stores for bids.

Surprisingly, what we found was that Home Depot (honestly) had an amazing designer that really listened to us (patiently) and shared some very cool new products. I know this is going to sound like a HD commercial, but we loved the results. We bought our appliances at a high end store and the farm sink at Ferguson, but this ended up being our dream kitchen without having to go crazy with custom.... We've sent (skeptical) neighbors to HD since and they've yet to disappoint. It may just be our local design lady...who knows, but this just goes to show you that you don't have to go broke for an amazing space.
