My husband and I need help with updating our kitchen. We bought this house a few years ago and have been saving to update our kitchen counter tops and floors. We like slate and natural tones as well as granite, but have heard the using slate floors with granite counter tops is a "no-no" or can be too busy.

That all depends on your granite - not all granite is "busy". Daltile makes (or used to make a slate looking porcelain tile. It is really pretty, gives you the look of slate, but it is MUCH easier to maintain and has a more consistent look. It might be a really good option for you and might work well with granite.

I like the hardwood floors idea or the less expensive laminate "made-to-look-like hardwood-floors" option.
I do agree with you that having any sort of pattern on the flooring would be way too busy with granite countertops.

I wouldn't say it's a no no. It's just that all that stone is cold and echo-ey. To add warmth, I'd suggest hardwood floors.Would it be possible to reverse the refrigerator and stove for a less bulky look?
