I like this kitchen, but does need a little color. As the room is an open design keep colors in same family, just lighter or darker than other walls. Under counter lighting is a great idea. Back splash , i would use stainless steel look paint or even stainless steel look adhesive back paper , would reflect light and match the sleek look of cabinets and pulls.

I think you need some color in your kitchen. I also don't agree with the chalkboard paint for the backsplash. Instead I think you should consider a brick/rust red backsplash and install a shelf in that space over the sink between the shorter cabinets. Then add some display items above your cabinets to add color to that area, too. They don't have to be numerous or pricey, in fact it could even be artwork hung on the walls up there because it can be seen from anywhere in entire room.

I really like the LED's idea. Something easy and cheap I could handle.

Lighting seems inadequate. How about some LED's under the upper cabinets to illuminate the countertop? The cabinets seem washed out. If you want a change see rustoleumtransformations.com for a new cabinet product getting lots of raves. Black, green or grey chalkboard? I think it will get messy very quickly and if you actually write on it you'll have chalk dust in your food. You'll have to seal it or greas splashes may stain it. If you're set on it, or have kids to entertain while you cook, do it on the island base.
