I suggest painting the cabinets (as well as ALL the brown wood trim that is found in the kitchen That trim makes it look more dated. You can use Zinsser primer to cover it. I had brown trim everywhere in one of my houses. YUCK. Also, I'd remove the soffit above the cabinets and put regular crown molding on the cabinets. It will open up the kitchen. As for wall color , if you are stuck with the tile, I'd go with a lighter apple green than what is in the tile border. Use pretty jars filled with lemons and limes to work with the colors you've got. A cheerful valance that is WAY shorter than what is there OR cafe curtains with black accents to bring in your black table & chairs. Black or brushed nickle hardware on the cabinets...You could really get it looking cute and stylish with little money - only lots of work (in the cabinet painting. GOOD LUCK!

We have decided to keep the cabinets for now. I know Rust-Oleum makes products designed to refinish countertops, tile and floors. Has anyone ever used these? If so, how would you rate them?

Yes, you can paint the pine. Sand , primer the paint. There is also paint for the tiel, but the fumes are awful. i would go retro and leave the tile. here is picture of what it could look like.

There are products specially made to deal with knotty pine, so go ahead and paint them. Also paint the baseboards, window frames and doors in the same color. It will radically change your kitchen. The suggestion for a roman shade on the window sounds good. As circumstances permit, you can change the backsplash and the countertops.

It will be a struggle to update this kitchen cheaply....I'd consider leaving the cabinets knotty pine and painting the wall tile instead. You could put tin tiles up over the tile backsplash...then come in different colors. I think an oil-rubbed bronze or black would look good, update the space, but keeps its character. Get rid of that curtain and hang a roman shade or matchstick blind. Then save for the full remodel! (:

I had kitchen cabinets just like these. You can repaint them but I suggest you strip, sand, and prime before you paint. We used a paint sprayer and the cabinets turned out better than we expected. We also bought new hardware. The hardest part was finding door hinges that would work. My husband had to cut them to fit and I spray painted them with outdoor paint to match the knobs. You can also get some crown molding and add it to the top and paint everything the same white. It will make the cabinets look taller and more up to date. Good luck.
