Stairway - help me please, We are looking for suggestions.

Our stairway sits in a great room (living/dining/kitchen). It is currently very traditional and we want to make it feel less so. We are trying to design the room with a modern/traditional feel. The room currently has light hardwood floors, cherry cabinets, brown granite, jute/gray walls with white trim and black accents.

We don't want to invest heavily in replacing the entire banister/spindal set or redoing the floors. We wonder if painting would be sufficent and if so which parts to paint, possibly replacing the knewl posts.

Living Room, In my 1930's home, I've tried hard to integrate my modern taste with some of the traditional elements, such as the moldings and archways. In my living room, I used a sort of greige-ish hue to accent my red couch and chair. My coffee table is from my grandmother's farmhouse - freshened up with a coat of glossy black paint on the base.
