No mantel in my rental house! What can I do?

This is a rental house that we've signed a lease on, but have never seen in person. It just dawned on me that there is no mantel for this fireplace. Also, I can't, for the life of me, figure out why there are two spaces. What might the part on the left be? Anyway, I would love suggestions for creating some type of mantel space without making permanent changes to the facade of the fireplace. Thank you!
