I'm almost finished with this room. I've updated the fireplace, put in wood floors, found a paint color, I love, took out a huge ugly sliding glass door and put in french doors, and now I'm ready to buy new furniture. My problem is figuring out a setup. The room is kind of divided in half by a doorway. The television is located on one of the built-ins surrounding the fireplace, which is right in front of the entrance to the room. Do I put the tv somewhere where I can stage the furniture around it? If so, where should I put it? I was thinking about making a sitting area to the right with a chaise and a small table. The room is mostly used for tv watching, reading, and internet use. I'm at a loss as to how to set it up.

I agree, you have made some great improvements. It seems to me that this room was made to be two separate spaces, seating areas, whatever. I think it would flow better if the tv were moved to the shelves to the left of the fireplace, and then a sofa and chair or sectional aimed that direction. I know..... it appears that a shelf would have to be removed in order for that to work. Or........any chance of moving that doorway?

You have done a great job so far. I love the paint color too. I can't offer suggestions on furniture placement but I commend you for not putting the TV above the fireplace. One thing you can consider is angling the new sofa toward the TV, vs. it hugging the wall. I've seen furniture angled in a room and it looks really good. You've done a great job with the room so far. Another suggestion might be to buy 2 small couches or a couch and loveseat , both containing a built-in recliner. You have the perfect set-up(altho maybe too narrow to place both on either side of the fireplace facing each other and the tv on the solid wall across from the fireplace. This way you can view the tv as well as the fireplace.. The furniture does not necessarily have to be DIRECTLY across from the tv.

The only problem I really see is the recliner. That will have to go and not be replaced. When you purchase your new furniture, keep the set up the same. Purchase an "L" sofa that has the chaise part and place it where your existing sofa is now with the chaise part coming out in front of the french doors. (There will be plenty of room for the doors to open. Then, instead of a chaise lounge in your sitting area, purchase two chairs and and an ottoman, then place a small table between the chairs. Believe me, the person who normally sits in the recliner would rather have the chaise in the area where the TV is. Then it is part of the sofa so you don't have the problem of having to find a place for another piece of furniture. BTW, I love what you have done in this room! Love the built-in! AND I think the TV is in the right spot, too.
