I agree with Lilypad the room needs color on the wall it adds such warmth to ant decor..pull the color you like best with what you have going on go from there wallart is a must the table needs a center piece the place mats should only be used when eating.if your going to keep them there all the time they should all match..the shelving needs to be cleaned up as in with dishes or nice setting things it seems a bit messy. i would also try painting it to brighten the area a lil more, its a great space you have ill be back to see what happens good luck

You can make your living room seem larger by floating your sofas in the middle. Turn your rug the other direction, middle of room, centered in front of DR opening. Pull sofas away from the walls to the middle of the room facing each other, glass coffee table between. Move black coffee table from DR to under the front window, load with live plants. Look for replacement rug large enough to fill the space so both sofas or at least the sofa near the door will sit completely on it. Iif there is enough space, turn your dining table the other direction, load the top of the built-ins with greenery, fill shelves with pops of color & hang ferns above 1/2 walls in opening between rooms. Paint & drapes as suggested below

Excellent contrast - now need middle color to tie it all together. You have cool colors, so stick to them and take out warm. Cool colors: white, gray, black, royal blue, violet, purple, periwinkle, red, navy, ice cool pastels, emerald green, taupe. Taupe is cool neutral and is gray-brown. Do not confuse brown with taupe. Brown is warm color. Warm colors: off-white, peach, orange, olive green, golden yellow, brown, tan. Take out all warm colors which are in pillows, curtain, dining room corner accessory plant thing. Punch up your cools with one jewel tone color. Red, or violet, or purple, or royal blue, or emerald green, or ice pastel. Get wall art that you love in same cool colors. Don't get pieces just to fill space. Get pieces you love. Switch out table center piece and place mats. Bring out place mats only when you eat. For center piece, get three small low plants or art pieces and put in a row horizontally down table.

The first thing I would do is paint the walls. All that gorgeous woodwork around the opening between the living and dining room will pop as will the built-ins. Try to coordinate the paint color with your carpet then replace the draperies to match...floor to ceiling flanking the sides only. Then bring in some art and accessories that add that punch of color.
