I don't think the fireplace is in the wrong place, I think it's a great focal point. No this house is not built yet however we chose this floor plan so this is what we want. Since it's not your typical floor plan I wanted to see if anyone could suggest how to furnish the great room. It is tricky but we will make it a great space. We actually did eliminate the half bath in the laundry room. What is so strange about an open layout?

Actually, the fireplace is in the wrong location. It needs to be moved about 12 feet into the greatroom. Create a hall for the two bedrooms instead of them being open to all the other rooms. This is a very strange layout. I don't understand the half bath in the laundry room either. Hope this house isn't built yet.

I would just 2 nice over stuffed chairs that swivel this way you could turn them to the fire place or to the rest of the room .

I can see your dilemma. The placement of the fireplace and the front door makes things awkward. That seems to be common with open plan designs today. My first impulse is to have the front door installed much further to the right. The second is to make a full wall on the cut off section of the kitchen counter where the cooktop is. Then, I would place a couples of reading chairs there, with an end table and large lamp in between. all placed to enjoy the fireplace, when lit. If you're using this space for TV, it's even harder. You might try a large one on the wall of the staircase. Or, you could place one on the wall to the left of the fireplace, and then float some seating to view the TV. Actually, another option would be to put the fireplace on the staircase wall. Then, extend the walls between dining room, greatroom and bedrooms, making seating easier, with the TV where I had previously suggested reading chairs. Hope these ideas get your own imagination to what works for you
