When I moved in it was a typical apartment and I had typical 20 year old college furniture. White walls and Ikea everywhere. I spent a month or so designing the entire space on a 3D program, making changes, getting inspiration everywhere I could find some. Many of my furniture I found on Craigslist for a bargain and it was either painted or otherwise refurbished to fit my space.
When I moved in the space where my book case exists was just an empty recess in the wall. Obviously I had to build a bookshelf in there.
I installed the picture frame molding myself and swapped all of the light fixtures and wall fixtures.
The light above the dining table was a CL find. I painted it black, extended the chain, omitted the shades and crystals.
The china cabinet was a $100 CL find. Built by the original owner's grandfather. I painted it white with a grey back on the interior to offset white china.
The fireplace was a $50 CL find I painted it white, added a wood medallion, and built an enclosure on the back so the fireplace would not be open to the wall making it a little more realistic.
The mirror above the couch is a beautiful mercury glass mirror from around 1900. My dad found it in an estate he bought. He painted it white and gave it to me as a gift.
Couch, rug, dining set, side tables, and accent chair are new.

The dorm room in these pictures is located in a dorm that was built in the 1930s. The size of the room is 12ft x 13ft about 169 square feet. It only had room for one of the desks the school provides. The challenge was creating an environment where the girls would each have a desk, storage room and some space to relax. With some very careful planning we were able to get it all in! I have included both before and after pictures to give you an idea. The comments from passersby at the beginning were wow you have a small room ... by the end they were wow your room is so big!! Funny how space planning can make such a difference!

I finally started renting my very first apartment during my senior year in college! I have spent a lot of time painting, decorating, and making this room a cozy oasis for me all on a tight student budget. I hope you enjoy!

First college apartment. Furniture included. Purchased comforter set from Overstock.com. Accessories purchased from my favorite stores: Ross, TJ Max, Stein Mart, and Garden Ridge. Nightstand purchased from Hobby Lobby. Made Initial frame on desk. Painted three stripes on focal wall to add a little dimension and interest in room. Really enjoyed helping my daughter design her new room. My baby girl has grown up!

I designed this space for my 11 year-old son in the hope that it would see him through college. He loved it so much he promised to keep his room clean forever. That lasted about a week, but it's still a favorite among him and his friends.

This is my single in my on campus apartment. I really wanted to make my room into somewhere that I could come back to after a really stressful day and just relax.
It is hard to get things to look the way I want since I have to use the furniture they give me, and I'm not allowed to put nails in the walls so everything has to be done with push pins. But I did my best!
*I just did some "remodeling" so the updated pictures are up first, then all the old ones say (OLD) so you know which ones are current*
