Bring on the Contemporary Function, This space was created for my 8 year old son. Creating a contemporary functional space for an 8 year old boy... when the space is a small 12x12 room... YIKES!! The inspirational piece for this room was the blue camouflage bedding that he picked out himself. All colors and texture were based off of this comforter. Function in a small space? Let's bring in a used inexpensive bunk bed with lots of storage. The bunk bed was painted pewter with pops of orange. The old wooden knobs were changed out for these sleek polished nickel knobs. Voila, a contemporary urban looking bed with lots of function. The small contemporary flip out chairs were a source to sit on, play on, and sleep on. More function! Oh yes, the job was getting done. Bringing in the rug was the gutsy make it or break it piece. This textured cow print rug mimicked the camouflage pattern, and brought the room to life. Adding floating shelves with his favorite toys made the room look larger and brought in pops of color on the modern white walls. Floating toy boxes? Oh yeah, I like that idea. Function, function, he puts his toys away!! Let'™s not forget the most important element, light. The existing ceiling fan did not allow enough light so another contemporary piece was brought in, this cool lamp with adjustable lighting. Instead of adding the shades I added some large bulbs to give it a unique funky look. Mission accomplished, contemporary and functional., Boys' Rooms Design
