Our kitchen was functional (just barely), but it seemed like I never had counter space to prep food on. The sink was on the opposite side of where the hot water tank is located in the basement, so it took forever to get hot water to the sink. When we had to replace our old refrigerator, we had to remove closet doors and put it inside because it wouldn't fit in the cubbyhole that the old fridge was in. We also had a 4-foot island which made it impossible for more than one person to be working in the kitchen. The cabinets and island were peeling on the sides, and there was mold on the cabinet I used to hang the kitchen towel on. The green and white tile floors were freezing cold in the winter, and I absolutely hated it after 20 years.
So, my daughter and I remodeled the entire kitchen. We took out the island altogether, replaced the laminate countertops with gorgeous granite, replaced the laminate backsplash with travertine tile, and replaced the cold tile floors with a much warmer engineered hardwood "tile" floor. We cut down the 3/4 wall that had separated the kitchen from the play room, and installed a granite snack bar. Now, the room is one spacious, warm, inviting place where there is plenty of room for multiple cooks, and lots of counter top for prepping food. And the 36" cabinets give us a little more space for everything.
We moved to our house in 2007. Our Master bathroom was beautiful but we started to notice tiles coming loose. We checked further: it had a leak and the entire shower was plagued with mold. My husband and I demolished it and two-and-a-half months later, we finally completed it. It is definitely better than before.
